How to Kick Procrastination in the Ass

I am the QUEEN of procrastination. I have literally waited until the legit last minute to do things that then end up taking less than 60 seconds. Well let’s be real – sometimes it’s procrastination and sometimes it’s anxiety, but that’s a different topic for a different day. For the most part, the procrastination kicks in when I’m supposed to be doing productive things like writing a paper or a blog post or make dreadful phone calls. I’ve really made it a goal for the summer to overcome this hindering issue because it makes me way less efficient and fuels my laziness. Overcoming procrastination has been something that I’ve aspired to do for so long, but I never really made a plan to go through with it so here I am! If you think about it, this is totally a form of self-care that NEEDS to happen right now. So without further ado, here are 5 tips that I’m going to implement this summer to help me beat the procrastination situation.

  • Put myself on a semi-set schedule

I work a full-time job in addition to blogging, pursuing my goal of becoming a tattoo artist, being a girlfriend and a dog mom. That’s a lot to handle with not much time in the day which means that A LOT of my time needs to be scheduled out to ensure that the major things are getting done with free time to spend much needed qt with my family + friends. I learned that this technique works for me after starting my full-time job in which my boss usually gives me time limits to work on projects – I’m so much more efficient when I’m concentrating on one thing in comparison with a million things running through my mind while I’m trying to figure out what I need to do next. I schedule time for writing + working on my blog, drawing + tattoo research, and anything else that can be deemed “work.” All of my other free time goes to my loved ones ?

  • Write EVERYTHING down

I believe that not remembering the shit that I need to do is one of the major reasons that I procrastinated again and again. Not only do I not want to do the stuff I’m avoiding, but I don’t even remember what I’m supposed to be doing half the time. My notes app on both my phone and laptop are literal lifesavers. I try to keep it as organized as possible, but they usually end up looking just like how the inside of my brain feels – scattered.

  • Break everything down

If I have big projects, I always break them down into smaller steps so that way I feel as though I’m constantly accomplishing something and not just constantly working without seeing progress. I have a plethora of projects broken down into to-do lists and I have even more just random lists. I love the feeling of checking something off!

  • Do my least favorite part first

Whether it’s working or blogging, there is always a part that I don’t like. During work, I HATE making a certain type of phone call that we do and I literally cringe before I just hunker down and start. This helps because it makes the rest of my day much more fun because the part that gives me anxiety is over and done with.

  • TREAT YO’SELF

If you don’t learn one thing from my blog, then you better learn to treat yourself for every little damn victory that you have. If I have a good day getting over the procrastination bug, best believe that I’m treating myself to ice cream. If I happen to have a procrastination-free week, babyyyyyyyy I’m going to get some clothes, maybe do a little thrifting or Target haul. I am CELEBRATING!

Procrastination has caused many failures in life and honestly, it has probably become more accepted than it should be. I’m done using procrastination as a crutch to be lazy because that’s all it is.
